Moving Files and Folders

There are many ways to move folders to new places. I will show you the three most common ways.  Let's move a folder from the desktop to "My Documents".

Right Click Method:  Right click on the folder you want to move.  The first
menu will pop up.  Select "Send To:, and the second menu will appear.
This second menu shows some possible destinations.  Choose "My
Documents."  As soon as you click on it, the menu disappears, and so
does the folder!  It is moved to its new home!  (Click on the picture below
for an enlargement.

CUT AND PASTE METHOD:  A second way to move a folder is to "cut and paste" it.  This is helpful if you want to move the folder to a place that is not among the "Sent To" choices in the second menu.  You can use the Right-click method, or the Button Bar method.

RIGHT-CLICK MENU METHOD for Cut and Paste

(Click each picture below for an enlargement.)

Right click on the folder you want to move.  The first menu pops up.  This time, select "Cut" from the menu (instead of Send To).  The menu disappears, but you can still see the folder, although it has "dimmed".

Next, right click on the icon for "My Documents".  It becomes highlighted and a menu pops up.  From this menu, chose "Paste":

The folder now disappears from the desktop.  It has been moved into "My Documents".

MENU BAR METHOD for Cut and Paste
This method is used to move a file or folder that is not on the desktop, but is already in another folder.  Instead of right-clicking on the folder to be moved, just left click on it to highlight (select) it. In the example below, we will move "My Music" to Bob's folder. Then go to the button bar at the top of the window, click on "Cut".  (You could also use the shortcut for Cut, which is Ctrl+X.  Read about shortcuts here.)

  Click for an enlargement.

Now, open the destination folder, (Bob's,) go up to the menu bar and now click on "Edit", then "Paste," as shown below.   You could also use the shortcut for Paste, Ctrl+V.  You can see that the folder "My Music" now resides in Bob's folder.

THE DRAG and DROP METHOD

DRAG METHOD:  A third common way to move files is to "drag" them to the new destination.  This time LEFT click on the folder you want to move, and hold the left button down.  Move the pointer arrow over the destination folder while holding that left button down.  You will see a "shadow" of the folder you are moving follow the pointer arrow across the screen.  When you reach your destination folder, that folder becomes highlighted.  Now let go of the left mouse button.  The folder disappears; it is now in the destination folder.
