Basics of Web Design

Welcome to the Basics of Web Design Teacher Inservice.  I hope you will learn much, and enjoy the class.  The format will be very informal, be sure to ask questions on any topic as we go along.

Before we begin, I'd like to share a (very) little history of the WWW...

The following questions should help give direction to the process of designing a webpage.

  • WHY do you want a web page?

    • Required for credit or class, an assignment?  "Highly suggested" by a boss or principal?  An ego trip?

  • WHAT is the purpose?

    • To tell, to sell, to showcase, to communicate (Blogs?), meet people (MySpace, FaceBook), to teach, to entertain

    • Teachers may use it for information communication, pictures, post assignments, showcase work, provide links for classroom use, as a starting point for projects (webquests), contact information.

  • WHO is the Audience?

    • Parents?

    • Students?

    • Community members?

    • Out-of-towners?

  • WHAT will your pages say?

    • The CONTENT of your page(s)

  • HOW will the pages look?

    • DESIGN and TECHNICAL--a merge of art and technology.

How you answer these questions will greatly affect how your web page might look

Let's take a look at what made a web page good, or bad...
