Session 3:  Graphics and Pictures

Making your own clip art

A drawing/painting program called  "Paint" comes with Windows.  There is also a Painting Program in AppleWorks.   Below is a small sample done with Paint.

Among other things, a painting program allows you to draw, with various size "brushes", in various colors, to fill in spaces with color, to erase, to make shapes, to crop your drawing, and to save your creation in various formats. The best way to familiarize yourself with Paint is to play with it.  When you are ready to save your drawing, the procedure is the same as in saving any document.  Choose "File" in the menu bar, then "Save as" and in the box that appears, you give your drawing a name, choose a location where it will be saved and the format you want to save your drawing in.  If it is a simple drawing as shown here, you can save it in "gif" format, otherwise choose "jpeg" format.

Microsoft Word has some drawing and art features that can be used to make clipart.  In the Menu bar, click on "Insert", then choose Picture.  Now choose one of the drawing/art features:  AutoShapes, WordArt, and New Drawing are all ways to make your own clipart.

AutoShapes and New Drawing are very similar.  Both work with the AutoShape toolbar. (see below) AutoShapes allows you to drag your shape to the size you want, and then puts a "drawing box" around it.  "New drawing" puts a "drawing box" into your document first, and then you add autoshapes into it.  You can add more than one shape in the box.  The picture below shows the drawing box when you click on "New Drawing".

An area for your drawing appears in your Word document as shown here.  You can enlarge this drawing area, or shrink it, by dragging the black corner boxes.  I chose "Stars and Banners" from the AutoShapes toolbar, and from Stars and Banners, I clicked on the 24 point star.  The star on the left appeared.  If you drag the little yellow box inward, you can alter the shape of the star, and the star on the right is one variation.  You can change it's size by dragging the white boxes surrounding the star.  Other AutoShapes include Arrows, Lines, Flow Charts, Speech Balloons, and Basic Shapes.

Another feature of Microsoft Word is "WordArt".

If you want to include text in your clip art, WordArt lets you make some very fancy text!  You choose a style from the gallery shown, click ok, then type your text in the box that appears.  Clicking Ok again will insert your fancy text into your document.  Once you've inserted it into your document, you'll be able to size it, rotate it, and alter it if the yellow box is available.  The "Belmont School-wide Code of Conduct" is an example of clipart I made for the Belmont web page using WordArt.
