How to Get Clipart from the Internet

The easiest way to find clipart on the Internet is to do a Google ( or Yahoo) search.  Go to Google.com and type "clip art" in the search box and click "Google Search".  Google will list literally thousands of sites and give a brief description.  Here are a few to get you started:

Another way to find a specific type of clip art is to click on the tab called "Images" and type in the name of the clip art you are looking for.  I will search for pictures of parades.   I type in "parade", as shown below, click on the Images tab, and hit enter on the keyboard, or click on Google Search in the browser.

Google will search the web and display all types of pictures of parades.

Here are 4 (of over 200,000) results of my Google image search for "parade".

Google will show you a thumbnail of each picture it finds on the web, and tell you its actual size (in pixels) and file size.  You can click on the thumbnail to view the actual size picture.  There will be a link below the thumbnail so that you can see the picture in context on the web page that published it.  It's a good idea to check out the source of any picture you get in this way, as it may be under copy write.

Most clip art sites on the web offer "free" clip art.  These may be downloaded and used as you wish.  Sometimes the site owner asks you to cite his site if you use his clipart.  Other clip art sites require you to register and pay for clipart.

When you find a clip art that you would like to use, you must download it to your computer before you can insert it into your document.  Here's how:

ON A PC:  (shown on the left)

A.  Right click on the picture you want to download.  This menu (shown on the left) will appear.

B.  Click on "Save picture as..." ,  then:

    1.  Name the file.  (It may already have a name, but you can change it.)
    2.  Choose a file type if one is not already shown.  It is usually best to keep it in the same format as you find it on the web, usually .jpg or .gif.
    3.  Choose the place on your computer where you will save it (your Derby Server folder.)
    4.  Click on "Save."  Your image will then download to the folder you selected.

ON A MAC:

Put the mouse pointer over the image. Click and hold down the mouse button. A menu will appear. Select "Save Image" to save the image to your hard drive.
